Section Items Module

Overview

The Section Items Module is used to create and manage your website’s navigation structure within Web pages on your website.

These are usually displayed within the sidebar of a Child Section page and allow you to create additional sub‑pages and resource links without overcrowding your main navigation.

Section Items give you access to:

• More website pages
• Downloadable files
• External links
• Groupings of related content
• Dropdown-style navigation within a page

Unlike the Pages Module, which controls content, and the Sections Module, which controls top‑level navigation, Section Items enhance in‑page navigation by providing deeper levels of access.

Using this module correctly ensures your website remains easy to navigate, logical, and well-structured, even as more content is added.

Understanding Section Items

The Sections structure supports three navigation levels:

• Parent Sections – Main navigation
• Child Sections – Dropdown categories & In-page sidebar
• Section Items – In‑page dropdown from a Child Section

Each website may be structured differently, but the functionality remains the same and this can be utilized in many different ways. For the example and demonstration we are using drop downs to give a clear indication of the how the relationship works.

Section Items

Section Items are the lowest navigation level.

They sit within a Child Section and are typically displayed on that Child Section’s page in a sidebar navigation area.

They allow you to link to:

• Additional pages
• Supporting content
• Downloads (PDFs, documents, etc.)
• External resources

How Section Items appear on your website

When viewing a Child Section page, the sidebar will typically display:

• The current Child Section (highlighted)
• A dropdown or list of Section Items assigned to that Child Section
• Other Child Sections within the same Parent Section

Example

If you are on the About Us page (Child Section), the sidebar may look like this:

About Us (Child Section – highlighted)
   └── Accounts (Section Item)
   └── Freedom of Information (Section Item)

Section Items only appear within their assigned Child Section They provide deeper navigation within a section They help avoid adding too many links to the main menu The sidebar combines:

• Sibling Child Sections (for switching between categories)
• Section Items (for exploring content within the current section)

Understanding URLs in Section Items

When creating a Section Item, the URL field controls where the link will take users.

In this system it will define the full page path (endpoint) that will be added to your main website domain.

How to enter your URL correctly

When adding a URL, you should:

• Always start with a "/"
• Enter the full path you want the the page to be designated tp

How it works

The URL you enter is added directly after your main website domain to create the final page address.

Example

If you enter:

/policies

The final URL will become:

https://yourdomain.com/policies

Creating longer page paths

You can also create more detailed URLs by including / within your input:

Example:

/your-union/how-we-are-run/policies

This would result in:

https://yourdomain.com/your-union/how-we-are-run/policies

When should I use this module?

Using the Section Items Module

Introduction

Section Item Dashboard 

Creating the Section Item

1. Navigate to Website and click Section Items

2. Click Create Section Item

   

   This will open the Section Item Creation Tab where you will add your content and select options

3. Name*
    Use a title that you want users to click when they click the dropdown from the Child Section

2. Section*
   Assign this to the Child Section you want this to be associated with

   

3. URL*
   Please head to Understanding URLS in Section Items Section to decide what to input within this field

   💡Note: You can also add linked Files and External Websites if you want to redirect users to other places.

   

4. Show Downloaded Icon*
   This is generally used if you are linking to a file so it will indicate to users this is a file instead of a webpage 

   

   

5. Click Submit

   

Checking the Section Item has been added

1. Navigate to the Website
2. Click the Parent Section you assigned the Child Section to

3. Click the Child Section you assigned the Section Item to

4. We should then see our new Section Item called "Policies" we created

5. Click on "Policies" 

   

6. We have now been taken to the new Page. Where currently it is empty, but you can create a templated Page using the Pages Module or a Custom Web Page using the Templates Module. 

Updating a Section

1. Navigate to Website > Section Items

2. 

3. Locate the Section Item to update by looking for the name Displayed on the Website within the Section Items Module
4. Click Modify on the left hand side

   

5. You can update:

   • Name
   • Section
   • URL
   • Show Download Icon

6. Click Submit

   

⚠️Warning: Please note if the URL is changed this means any page directed to this url would no longer be available. Please ensure you update the corresponding Page within the Pages Module or Custom Template within the Templates Module to ensure a page is displayed with the new URL.

6. Go to the Website and check to ensure the changes have been applied

Deleting a Section

1. Navigate to Website > Section Items

2. 

3. Locate the Section Item to update by looking for the name Displayed on the Website within the Section Items Module
4. Click Delete on the right hand side

   

5. Confirm Deletion by pressing "Remove"

   

6. Go to the Website and check the Navigation to ensure the Section Item has been deleted
